Vanuatu is an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. The official currency of Vanuatu is the Vanuatu Vatu (VUV). The VUV is divided into 100 cents and is issued by the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu. As of June 2016, 1 US dollar equals approximately 109 VUV.The Vanuatu Vatu has a history that dates back to before European colonization. In fact, the word “vatus” means “stone” in some local languages, as early forms of currency were made out of stone or shells. However, after colonization by Europeans began in earnest during the 19th century, various other currencies were used in Vanuatum including French Polynesian francs and British pounds sterling. It wasn’t until 1981 that the modern day form of the Vanuatuan currency came into existence.
