The Maldives Rufiyaa is the national currency of the Republic of Maldives. It is subdivided into 100 laari and is pegged to the US dollar at a rate of 1 USD = 15.42 MVR. The Rufiyaa was introduced in 1947, replacing the earlier Maldive Islands rupee. The name "Rufiyaa" means "silver" in Dhivehi, the language spoken in the Maldives. The Rufiyaa has been subject to high inflation since its introduction, due largely to government deficit spending financed by central bank credit creation. As a result, it has lost over 95% of its value against the US dollar since 1987. Despite this, it remains one of only three currencies pegged to the dollar (along with Hong Kong's Dollar and Kuwait's Dinar) that have not experienced a devaluation or revaluation against their peg over this period."So there you have it: everything you need to know about Maldives' national currency!
