The Lightning Network is a technological solution intended to solve the problem of transaction speed on the Bitcoin blockchain by introducing off-chain transactions. This means that rather than each transaction being processed and verified by the Bitcoin network, they are instead processed and verified by a separate, independent network. This should theoretically improve transaction speeds, as well as reduce costs associated with processing each individual transaction. The Lightning Network is still in development and has not yet been fully implemented on the Bitcoin network. However, it has been successfully tested on testnets and is currently being trialed on mainnet. If successful, it could potentially be rolled out to other blockchains in the future.
