The Libyan Dinar is the official currency of Libya. The dinar was introduced in 1973, replacing the Libyan Pound. The dinar is subdivided into 1000 dirhams. The name "dinar" is derived from the Roman denarius, used in North Africa before the advent of Islam. The symbol for the dinar is .د.ل (unicode U+062F U+002E U+0644), which includes a latin letter 'D' with two dots above it and a ligature of an Arabic letter 'L'.Since 2011, following the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi's regime, several banks have issued new banknotes on behalf of Libya's Central Bank; however not all are currently in use due to ongoing conflict and political instability within Libya itself.
