Kazakstan Tenge is the currency of Kazakstan and its currency code (KZT). The name "tenge" comes from the Turkic word meaning "a measure of weight or volume." The tenge was introduced in 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble at a rate of 1 tenge = 500 rubles. The tenge is subdivided into 100 tiyin (тиын), which are also called kopeck (копейка).The Kazakstani government has been working hard to keep the value of the tenge stable against major currencies. In 2015, they even peg it to a basket consisting of 55% US dollars and 45% euros. This has helped maintain stability in an otherwise volatile region.Despite these efforts, however, there are still some who believe that Kazakstan would be better off ditching the tenge altogether and adopting either the US dollar or euro as its official currency. They argue that this would make trade and investment easier, as well as reduce inflationary pressures. But for now at least, it looks like Kazakstan is sticking with its own unique currency.
