Guernsey Pounds are the currency of Guernsey and its currency code is (GGP). The Guernsey Pound is subdivided into 100 pence. Banknotes are issued by the States of Guernsey and depict various scenes around the island. Coins in circulation include 1 penny, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50pence and £1 denominations.The history of money on Guernsey can be traced back to Roman times when coins were brought over from neighbouring Normandy. In 1302 King Edward I of England gave a charter to the Bailiff and Jurats (the ruling body on Guernsey) to mint their own coins which could only be used on the island. These ‘Gros Tournois’ were similar in size and shape to French coins but had a different design and inscription. They were produced until 1642 when they were replaced by ‘Pistolets’ – small silver coins with a value of six shillings each (36p today).In 1816 copper pennies were introduced followed by silver two shilling pieces in 1837. The first banknotes appeared in 1850 when £1 notes were issued by La Banque de L’Isle de la Mancha – an English bank that operated branches in both Jersey and Guernsey at that time . From 1905 onwards notes have been printed specifically for use onGuernsey with new designs being released every few years featuring scenes around the island such as its beaches or harbours .Today there are five denominations currently in circulation – 1 penny, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10pENCE 20 Pence 50 Pence &£1- with plans for a new £5 note to be released soon.. The total value of all notes currently circulating is approximately £27 million.
