GPU mining is a digital currency mining activity that uses a graphics processing unit (GPU) to solve the cryptographic hashing algorithm. GPUs are highly parallel processors that can execute hundreds of thousands of instructions per second.The first thing we have to understand about GPU mining is that it's similar but not the same thing as bitcoin mining. Bitcoin uses SHA-256 hashing, which is computationally intensive and makes it difficult to mine with GPUs. On the other hand, altcoins – such as Litecoin and Dogecoin – are designed specifically for GPU mining.GPUs are the most basic and widely used video cards, which can process hashes much faster than CPUs but not as fast as ASICs. And that's why GPU mining is typically reserved for mining altcoins (and other cryptocurrencies) due to the high mining difficulty of bitcoin.
