GAFAM is an acronym for five popular U.S. tech stocks: Google (Alphabet), Apple, Facebook (Meta), Amazon, and Microsoft. The term was coined in 2017 as a portmanteau of the words "Google," "Apple," "Facebook," "Amazon," and "Microsoft."The acronym has come to represent the growing power of these companies in the technology industry, with many referring to them as the “big five” or “FAAMM” (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft). Each company dominates its respective field: Google has a commanding lead in search; Apple is the world's most valuable public company; Facebook is by far the largest social network; Amazon dominates e-commerce; and Microsoft remains one of the world's largest software companies. While there are other large tech firms such as IBM, Intel, Oracle and Salesforce that could be included in this group, GAFAM represents some of the most influential players in today's digital age. Their influence extends beyond just their core businesses – they are also major investors in new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and self-driving cars. As a result, GAFAM will continue to play a dominant role in shaping our digital future.
