Filipino Pesos are the currency of the Philippines. They're abbreviated PHP, and their ISO code is PHP. Pesos come in bills and coins, with different denominations for each. The smallest bill is a 1-peso note, and the largest is a 100-peso note. The smallest coin is a 5-centavo coin (nicknamed "quin"), and the largest is a 50-peso coin. The history of pesos in the Philippines dates back to 1878, when they were first introduced as Spanish dollars backed by gold reserves. In 1903, after Philippine independence was declared from Spain, new coins were minted specifically for use in the Philippines; these bore inscriptions in both English and Tagalog (the national language). In 1945, following World War II and Japan's defeat in the Pacific Theater, US occupation forces issued new paper money bearing images of American presidents on one side and Filipino scenes on the other; this money remained legal tender after Philippine independence was restored in 1946. Finally, beginning in 1967 banknotes were produced which no longer featured portraits of foreign leaders; these remain current today as modern Philippine pesos.
