Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a type of cryptocurrency that is a continuation of the original Ethereum blockchain following the DAO attack in June 2016. The DAO was a decentralized autonomous organization based on the Ethereum platform that allowed investors to pool their funds together to back projects. However, due to a coding error, $50 million worth of Ether were taken from the DAO and moved into another account. This led to a split in the Ethereum community with some advocating for the hard fork (a change in code that would invalidate transactions made on previous versions of the blockchain) while others wanted to keep the original chain going, which resulted in Ethereum Classic being created. While there are not many major differences between ETH and ETC, one key difference is that ETC does not have as much support from developers as ETH does. In addition, because it was created as a result of controversy surrounding The DAO hack, some people view it less favorably than other cryptocurrencies. Nonetheless, Ethereum Classic remains an interesting option for those looking for an alternative to Bitcoin and other more well-known cryptocurrencies.
