The Dominican peso (DOP) is the currency of the Dominican Republic. It is subdivided into 100 centavos. The symbol for the peso is "RD$" and its ISO code is DOP.The first coins were issued in 1844, while notes were introduced in 1865. Until 1891, Spanish colonial reales circulated concurrently with Dominican pesos. After independence, silver coins were issued but they were quickly replaced by cupro-nickel pieces in 1896. In 1905, gold coins denominated in centavos (1/100th of a peso) were introduced, followed by 1 and 5 peso denominations in 1918 and 1919 respectively.In 1924, copper-nickel 50 centavos and 1peso coins replaced the silver ones whilst cupro-nickel 2 and 5 Pesos where introduced in 1938 replacing gold coinage . The 10 Peso coin was not struck again after 1939 until 1992 .In 1966 banknotes where introduced for 20 to 1000 Pesos which where gradually reduced to 10 to 500 Pesos between 1974 - 1985 . A new series of banknotes dated 1984 was issued between 1986 - 1991 for 20 to 1000 Pesoes with two commemorative issues 500 & 1000 PESOS celebrating Christopher Columbus Quincentenary 14921992 . This series was reprinted with slight changes from 1993 - 2000Today there are Coins available for 1c.,5c.,10c.,25 ctvs ,50 ctvs ,1 RD$,2 RD$,5 RD$ And Banknotes are available For 10;20;50;100;200;500RD$.
