Burundi Francs is the currency of Burundi. Currency code (BIF). The franc is subdivided into 100 centimes. Although it is not frequently used outside of the country, it remains legal tender in Burundi. The franc was introduced in 1916, replacing the Belgian Congo franc at a rate of 1 to 10,000. In 1960, following independence from Belgium, the new Republic of Burundi issued coins denominated in centimes and francs. Banknotes were issued starting in 1966 with denominations ranging from 5 to 500 francs.
