The Bahamian Dollar or Bahamas Dollars is the official currency of The Bahamas. The Bahamian dollar, or "buck" was introduced on June 2, 1969 and is considered a legacy currency. It replaced the British West Indies dollar. The currency code is BSD.The Bahamian dollar is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively B$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. The currency is sometimes informally called the "dolla" or "buck", which is usually used when expressing prices, such as "$10 dolla bill".In 1967, prior to independence, the British West Indies dollar was designated the official currency of The Bahamas. However, shortly after independence, the government of The Bahamas wished to have a unique Bahamian identity. The government coined 1 and 5 dollar coins using the same standard as for the British West Indies dollar. 1 and 2 dollar coins were later introduced which were smaller in size than the corresponding British coins. In 1969,the Bahamian dollar was introduced in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 20 dollars.
