Attrition

Attrition

Attrition is a gradual but deliberate reduction in staff numbers that usually occurs when employees retire or resign and are not replaced. It can also refer to involuntary reductions in staff, such as layoffs. Downsizing is the most common form of attrition, where employees either resign or retire and aren't replaced by the company. This type of attrition is usually voluntary, meaning that the employees choose to leave their jobs for various reasons. However, there have been cases where companies have had to lay off workers due to financial difficulties or other factors beyond their control.
There are several benefits associated with downsizing through attrition. First, it can help a company reduce costs by eliminating positions that are no longer needed. Additionally, it can make the remaining workforce more productive by increasing competition for available jobs and making workers more aware of their own performance levels. Finally, downsizing through attrition can help a company improve its organizational structure by getting rid of unnecessary bureaucracy and allowing newer and more talented employees to move up into management positions.
